It’s never too early to begin reading books!

Reading aloud is one of the most powerful ways you can impact a child’s language development and future academic success. This excellent chart provides a guide to early literacy milestones starting from 6 months on up to kindergarten. The chart includes what to look for as you observe your child’s behavior and what you can do to support his or her interactions with literature.

This information is provided by a lovely organization called “Reach Out and Read.”  They engage pediatricians in talking with families about the importance of reading aloud beginning in infancy.  They give children a new book to take home at each checkup, and provide reading materials for the waiting rooms.
